Voice With Julia Membership

The Voice with Julia Membership is a private, application-only space for classical sopranos, mezzos, and contraltos seeking serious, in-depth technical work in a space built on trust and discretion.

I recommend Julia’s expertise, artistry and mentorship without any hesitation!

I started working with Julia through an online group course set up during the Covid-19 pandemic. I learned an invaluable amount about the various technical issues and the sheer depth of exploration needed during a singer’s development and career. From examining the great singers of the past and today, analysing technical anatomical structures and mini masterclasses, the course opened my eyes to so many more elements of my vocal technique that continue to emerge, change and shape my craft and very helpful guidance on vocal hygiene, management and even how to protect the voice from the demands of the “business”. Following this, Julia has coached me on several occasions and been a kind, supportive and precise mentor, particularly during my preparations for the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2023 finals and a subsequent overwhelming change of pace in my career and demands. She has a vast amount of knowledge on the various schools of singing: both historic and contemporary. She is always able to explain complex vocal science in manageable and accessible ways and there is always room for personal and individual contribution- essential for any singer discovering their TRUE voices.

Julia also has an immense amount of material available; literature, videos, discussion forums and a fun, accessible and honest presence on social media for bite-size discoveries at anytime which constantly updates.

She made my vocal and identity crisis bearable with her good nature and patience.

It’s hard to put into just a few words what working with you has done for me. I guess a summary is - shattered expectations- in the best way. After decades of singing and thinking about classical singing I thought I knew what it was. When my voice changed and I lost High notes and ease after menopause; I just assumed I was too old to sing. I dared start a candid conversation with Julia online which led to lessons and involvement in the voice with Julia group and even resulted in a trip to Lucca Bel Canto. At the time I reached out, singing hurt physically and emotionally and psychically. I lost what made me special and what I counted on to make life worth living. I thought it was gone forever and I was trying to grieve and accept it but was inwardly distraught as I lost more and more high notes and ease in any of my range. Julia was encouraging, precise, methodical and firm in her belief and technical corrections. It was slow steady work that took a couple of years (with lots of breaks and break downs on my part because I wanted it too much to believe it could be true that I still had good singing years ahead of me). Julia’s positivity and consistency and the warmth and joy of the voice with Julia group helped me hang in there in the darkest times. I am singing every day now, coaching new arias every week and regaining notes and flexibility that I thought were gone for good. It has taken time and deliberate effort to relearn my technique. But the more I sing the more I sing! The supportive voice with Julia community and creative, knowledgeable, detailed, precise, innovative and personal way Julia works with me and each singer and voice type online and especially in person amazes me. She taught an old dog a new trick and as my voice responds positively I feel like a vocal spring chicken - excited to learn and grow!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I be in the VWJ Membership and work with another teacher?

Yes. Many members also study privately with other teachers. The membership offers advanced technical and artistic support, but it is not a 1:1 private teaching relationship unless you decide to add private lessons.

How are masterclasses and meetings scheduled?

Group meetings are usually held on weekends based on majority availability. Masterclasses are scheduled around singers’ individual calendars, and everyone who wants to sing that month is included.

Do I get personal feedback?

Yes. You receive direct feedback in masterclasses, meetings, and through posted videos. Private lessons are optional and separate.

What if I cannot attend live?

All meetings and masterclasses are recorded. If you cannot attend, you can still submit videos for feedback and watch the replays.

Who is the membership for?

The membership is for serious classical singers. Members range from current students to top professionals to experienced amateurs returning to their craft. If you are unsure, you can apply and I will let you know whether it is a good fit.

Is this only for classical singers?

Primarily yes. The work is centered on classical technique, functional understanding of the voice, healthy registration, and advanced technical refinement.

Can I join from anywhere in the world?

Yes. Sessions are scheduled with multiple time zones in mind whenever possible.

Can I cancel my membership anytime?

Yes. You may cancel whenever you need to. The membership is meant to be a steady, committed environment rather than a quick hop in and hop out experience, which protects the continuity and security of the group.
